ベトナム グレアム・グリーンは1950年から1955年にわたってベトナムを訪問し、その滞在期間はのべ2年間にわたった。ライフやサンデー・タイムズに記者として送稿するいっぽう、サイゴン（現在のホーチミン市）のコンチネンタルホテルを拠点に執筆活動を行い、1955年に発表したのが本書「おとなしいアメリカ人」である。
